Expressivity Determinants in Computer Music Performance Joseph Butch Rovan, Marcelo M. Wanderley, Shlomo Dubnov and Philippe Depalle Analysis-Synthesis Team/Real-Time Systems Group IRCAM France frovan, wanderle, dubnov, [email protected] Abstract This paper presents ongoing work on gesture mapping strategies and applications to sound synthesis by signal models controlled via a standard MIDI wind controller. Our approach consists in considering di erent mapping strategies in order to achieve \ ne" (therefore in the authors' opinion, potentially expressive) control of additive synthesis by coupling originally independent outputs from the wind controller. These control signals are applied to nine di erent clarinet data les, obtained from analysis of clarinet sounds, which are arranged in an expressive timbral subspace and interpolated in real-time, using FTS 1.4, IRCAM's digital signal processing environment. An analysis of the resulting interpolation is also provided and topics related to sound morphing techniques are discussed.

Gestural Control of Sound Synthesis and Processing Algorithms

Computer programs such as MUSIC V or CSOUND lead to a huge number of sound examples, either in the synthesis or in the processing domain. The translation of such algorithms to real-time programs such as MAX-MSP allows these digitally created sounds to be used effectively in performance. This includes interpretation, expressivity, or even improvisation and creativity. This particular bias of our...

Mapping Through Listening

Gesture-to-sound mapping is generally defined as the association between gestural and sound parameters. This article describes an approach that brings forward the perception-action loop as a fundamental design principle for gesture–sound mapping in digital music instrument. Our approach considers the processes of listening as the foundation – and the first step – in the design of action-sound r...

The Procedural Sounds and Music of ECHO: : Canyon

In the live game-based performance work ECHO::Canyon, the procedural generation of sound and music is used to create tight crossmodal couplings between mechanics in the visual modality, such as avatar motion, gesture and state, and attributes such as timbre, amplitude and frequency from the auditory modality. Real-time data streams representing user-controlled and AI driven avatar parameters of...

Musical Performance Practice on Sensor-based Instruments

Performance has traditionally been a principal outlet for musical expression – it is the moment when music is communicated from musician to listener. This tradition has been challenged and augmented in this century – recorded and broadcast media technologies have brought new modes of listening to music, while conceptual developments have given rise to extremes such as music not to be heard. Com...

Design Concepts and Control Strategies for Interactive Improvisational Music Systems

This paper will focus on two important and under explored areas pertinent to interactive, improvisational performance. First, an overview of basic control strategies will be outlined. Next, techniques for acquiring control data from a real-time audio stream, and approaches to mapping this data to interactive digital signal processing functions, will be explored. Examples from a current work by ...
